So, I have been a writer for the longest time now. Three years into my writing career, I found myself desiring and wanting to start a blog of my own. I wanted what other renowned bloggers like Jackson Biko (founder and owner of the Biko Zulu blog) had. Mind you, this was before I realized that one could monetize a blog – make it work for me and never go back to my 8-5 job or even better. My dreams are valid I always told myself. But a few months ago, I decided enough was enough. After all, what good were my dreams if I always shelved them for a later date? If it was just all in my head unknown to the world? Nothing right? So I decided to get on with it and here we are.
But now, looking back at all the times I kept postponing this dream, I realized one thing. I was fearful. Yes, FEAR kept me away from the gratification I was looking for. It kept whispering to my ear that I wasn’t good enough, not composed enough, not eloquent and not a great story teller. Long story short, just not a ‘successful blogger’ material. And the worst part is that I listened to that voice.
If you are reading this and like me are shelving your dream for tomorrow, a tomorrow that never comes, it’s time to turn things around for yourself. You need to come to the realization that there is no single person who is born a blogger, just like no one is born a doctor, engineer, teacher, motivational speaker, tech guru, you name it. Professionals learn and perfect the skills gained along the way, and with time excel and earn titles of ‘The Best’
Determinants of Success
I love watching Ted talk videos on YouTube. The very first Ted Talk Video I stumbled upon, the one happened to be the light bulb that changed my view of the world and business is ‘The Big Lie of Small Business by Vusi Thembekwayo. I highly recommend you watch it.
So exactly two months ago, from today, Sunday 27th of August, I stumbled upon a video by Angela Lee Duckworth. In this particular video that YouTube so graciously recommended to me, she spoke on a very important element of determining success – GRIT. BTW, is it just me or is the recommended YouTube algorithm a mind reading software? Its ability to present me with videos I want to watch before I even know it myself if quite impressive.
So anyway, Angela briefly details her journey to becoming a top psychologist and how her inquisitive nature led to conducting social experiments and studies which in turn led her to that conclusion.
In a nut shell, she has it that the difference between successful persons and not so successful persons in the world is GRIT. Shocking enough, it was not social intelligence, Good looks, physical health or IQ like many of us believe. Grit is stamina, focus, consistency over years, working hard to achieve dreams that have you spending sleepless nights or even day dreaming, living life like it’s a marathon and not a sprint.
At this point, (if you haven’t already) google Vusi Thembekwayo and read his life story and journey to success, you will most surely agree with the conclusion made by Angela.
God Backs it Up
I am Christian and Love reading my bible. Much to my awe, I came across a verse that sealed it for me.
Ecclesiastes 9:11 “I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.”
It is mostly self-explanatory but being a soon successful blogger, this is what the verse should mean to you. The industry or niche you want to get into might seem crowded. It might seem like everything there is to write about has been written. You might feel you have got nothing on the already established bloggers. But here is what God says, the race is not won by the fastest, battles by those who are strong, favour is not given to the learned or educated and my most favorite part, wealth is not set aside for the brilliant…time, chance, and opportunity are given to everyone. So, it’s really up to you to seize the moment and start your journey and in no time, you will live your dream.
Now do not get me wrong, it will not be easy but then again who said success will be served to us on a silver platter? But on the other hand, it is very much doable and possible. Just believe in yourself and for Pete’s sake just start already.
